Please join us this Friday, January 25, in the ArtSciLab (ATC 3.209) for this week’s Watering Hole. There will be presentations on the topics of Representation and Presentation in Photography as well as discussions on the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2019).

Our first speaker is Francesca Brunetti. She was born in Rome, where she studied Philosophy at La Sapienza University of Rome. After pursuing her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Philosophy she moved to Scotland where she studied Art and Design at the Edinburgh College of Art and earned a second Master’s in Communication Design at the Glasgow School of Art with a focus on Illustration. Currently she has settled in Dallas, where she is pursuing a PhD in Aesthetic Studies at The University of Texas at Dallas.

Ms. Brunetti argues that in representing reality, photography reproduces, at a visual level, the cultural and ideological aspects of its society. At the same time, photography can be used to decodify and question society’s principles by presenting reality itself in a way that promotes critical thinking about its criteria and norms. By discussing photography according to the concepts of representation and presentation the curator describes its development from the beginning of the 20th century to now.

Our second speaker will be ATEC’s very own Associate Dean, Dale MacDonald. He will be discussing his recent experiences at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as ZKM 2019.
