About the Artist

Professor Donna J. Cox, MFA, PhD, is the first Michael Aiken Chair, Director of the Advanced Visualization Laboratory, Director of the Emerging Digital Research and Education in Arts Media (eDream) Institute and Associate Director for Research and Education at the National Center for Supercomputing Application; Professor School Art and Design, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Cox is an internationally acclaimed ground-breaker in the art of scientific visualization. She’s best known for defining Renaissance Teams, “where specialists provide a broad spectrum of skills in the quest for discovery” and for her use of supercomputers for visualization. She and her collaborators have thrilled millions around the world with stunning cinematic presentations of science for giant-screen productions, digital museum shows, IMAX movies, HD/4K broadcast and streaming documentaries. Twice she’s walked the Academy Awards’ red carpet: first with former students and again as art director of scientific visualization for the IMAX film, Cosmic Voyage, 1997.  In 2017, the Immersive Media Entertainment Research in Science and Art (IMERSA) organization awarded Cox with a lifetime achievement award for lasting contributions to the big screen community. In March 2018, she received the Illinois Innovation Transfer Award in recognition of work with significant societal impact.

Cox serves as Culture & Society Theme Lead for the Discovery Partner’s Institute for the Illinois system. She is the lead co-editor and contributor to the recently published New Media Futures: The Rise of Women in the Digital Arts. In 10 days, the ACM SIGGRAPH awards Cox with the distinguished lifetime achievement award in digital art and was inducted into the ACM SIGGRAPH Academy 2019.
