Graduate Admissions Requirements

Degree-specific Requirements

At ATEC, we believe applying to graduate studies is a big step and we are here to help you along the way. Our advising team is ready to answer questions and guide you on your journey.

Before you apply, first talk with a graduate advisor about the program that interests you and when you would like to begin your studies. We encourage you to come and meet ATEC, attend a Graduate Studies Overview session, and tour our state-of-the-art facilities to get a feel for academic and student life. Secondly, review information about the graduate application process and University deadlines at utdallas.edu/graduate.

When you are ready, review the additional requirements below for ATEC graduate studies that must accompany your application.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Degree Requirements – Previous academic degree at the graduate level (MA, MS, or MFA) in an appropriate field (i.e., Art, Computer Science, and so forth.)

Statement of Purpose – Students applying to the doctoral program should submit a statement of purpose outlining their previous academic and creative expertise and describing future research interests, including how their interests connect to the curriculum, faculty, labs, or initiatives in ATEC.

Priority Consideration for Admission and Funding – Completed applications to the doctoral program must be received on or before December 1. Students are accepted for the fall semester only. University deadlines apply.

Portfolio Presentation – Applicants must also present a portfolio, including a 10- to 20-page academic writing sample and any other evidence of scholarly or creative endeavor achieved by the applicant. The portfolio should also contain a curriculum vita.

Master of Arts (MA)

Degree Requirements – Previous academic degree at the graduate level (BA, BS, MA, or MFA) in an appropriate field (i.e., Art, Computer Science, and so forth.)

GPA – A grade point average of 3.3 (especially in upper-division undergraduate and graduate work.)

Letters of Recommendation – Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak on the candidate’s probability of success in graduate school.

Priority Consideration for Admission and Funding – Completed applications to the MA program must be received on or before December 1. Should space remain, ATEC will continue to accept applications in accordance with University deadlines. Students are accepted for the fall semester only.

*Applications to the Interaction Design pathway are suspended for academic year 2018-19.

Master of Arts degree

Master of Fine Arts (MFA)

Degree Requirements – Previous academic degree at the graduate level (BA, BS, MA, or MFA) in an appropriate field (i.e., Art, Computer Science, and so forth.)

GPA – A grade point average of 3.3 (especially in upper-division undergraduate and graduate work.)

Letters of Recommendation – Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak on the candidate’s probability of success in graduate school.

Admission Essay – Applicants should submit a 500-700 words essay explaining their work or research. The essay will discuss past and present artistic practices as well as future directions or goals for the work, and describe how the Master of Fine Arts in Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication is particularly suited to their professional goals.

Priority Consideration for Admission and Funding – Completed applications to the MFA program must be received on or before December 1. Should space remain, ATEC will continue to accept applications in accordance with University deadlines. Students are accepted for the fall semester only.
