Laura Imaoka

Assistant Professor of Instruction

As a lecturer in the digital humanities, Laura Beltz Imaoka supports practice-based learning that complements traditional forms of assessment. Her research interests encompass the areas of visual studies, film and media studies, and critical geography with a particular interest in geospatial technology, ecomedia, and the spatial imagination of disasters. As an Assistant Professor of Instruction at ATEC, she teaches courses in Critical Media Studies.

Imaoka has published in the edited collection, Extreme Weather and Global Media (Routledge, 2015), as well as collaboratively in Environmental and Planning A and The Canadian Geographer (forthcoming).

Prior to coming to Texas, she was a Research Associate for UC Irvine’s School of Humanities. Imaoka received her MA in Anthropology from California State University, Northridge, and her PhD in Visual Studies from the University of California, Irvine.
