Admissions Requirements

Undergraduate Programs

Students considering Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication require strong preparation. Successful ATEC students demonstrate the following characteristics:

BA Students

  • Excellent communication skills are important. ATEC is a collaborative community.
  • Strong work ethics are essential. ATEC students spend many hours, designing, developing, and making outside of the classroom.
  • Creating and maintaining a successful portfolio of work is critical. ATEC students must demonstrate a successful portfolio for acceptance into a pathway.

Graduate Programs

Graduate students at the School of Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication (ATEC) at the University of Texas at Dallas appreciate the opportunities of cross-disciplinary education and aspire to be visionary scholars, researchers, teachers, and artists.

Students interested in pursuing a graduate degree at ATEC must take the steps below and meet admission requirements.

First: Attend an MA / MFA or PhD program review session. For session date(s) and information visit the ATEC News & Events section of our site.

Second: Once attending a session, request an appointment with a Graduate Advisor should you need additional assistance. We are ready to help!

Third: Apply for Admission. To review the steps to apply visit utdallas.edu/graduate. Applicants must meet the admission requirements below for graduate programs at ATEC.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Students

  • Degree Requirements – Previous academic degree at the graduate level (MA, MS, or MFA) in an appropriate field (i.e., Art, Computer Science, and so forth.)
  • Statement of Purpose – Students applying to the doctoral program should submit a statement of purpose outlining their previous academic and creative expertise and describing future research interests, including how their interests connect to the curriculum, faculty, labs, or initiatives in ATEC.
  • Priority Consideration for Admission and Funding – Completed applications to the doctoral program must be received on or before December 1. Students are accepted for the fall semester only. University deadlines apply.
  • Portfolio Presentation – Applicants must also present a portfolio, including a 10- to 20-page academic writing sample and any other evidence of scholarly or creative endeavor achieved by the applicant. The portfolio should also contain a curriculum vita.

Master of Arts (MA) Students

  • Degree Requirements – Previous academic degree at the graduate level (BA, BS, MA, or MFA) in an appropriate field (i.e., Art, Computer Science, and so forth.)
  • GPA – A grade point average of 3.3 (especially in upper-division undergraduate and graduate work.)
  • Letters of Recommendation – Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak on the candidate’s probability of success in graduate school.
  • Priority Consideration for Admission and Funding – Completed applications to the MA program must be received on or before December 1. Should space remain, ATEC will continue to accept applications in accordance with University deadlines. Students are accepted for the fall semester only.
  • *Applications to the Interaction Design pathway are suspended for academic year 2018-19.

Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Students

  • Degree Requirements – Previous academic degree at the graduate level (BA, BS, MA, or MFA) in an appropriate field (i.e., Art, Computer Science, and so forth.)
  • GPA – A grade point average of 3.3 (especially in upper-division undergraduate and graduate work.)
  • Letters of Recommendation – Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak on the candidate’s probability of success in graduate school.
  • Admission Essay – Applicants should submit a 500-700 words essay explaining their work or research. The essay will discuss past and present artistic practices as well as future directions or goals for the work, and describe how the Master of Fine Arts in Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication is particularly suited to their professional goals.
  • Priority Consideration for Admission and Funding – Completed applications to the MFA program must be received on or before December 1. Should space remain, ATEC will continue to accept applications in accordance with University deadlines. Students are accepted for the fall semester only.
